Enabling entrepreneurs turn their visions into reality
A story that combines intense experience, a passion for product, and a clear vision has the power to elicit a real affinity amongst people and attract them to it. It was such a story that attracted me to Uzabase back in 2011.
One thing I have learned from my own experience in business is that a product that caters to the core needs of users, rather than superfical ones, and a team around you that you can trust and rely upon are essential.
Another lesson has been that the growth of a business rests upon the existence of both entrepreneurs and what I call "performers". In my time at Uzabase, I have tried to support the business not as an entrepreneur but as a performer, somebody who provides a practical shape to the ideas of entrepreneurs.
Bringing into reality the worlds painted by entrepreneurs remains my role as a venture capitalist, and I very much look forward to encountering a whole host of captivating stories going forward.
Following his graduation from Keio University's Graduate School of Science and Technology, Osamu worked as an equity research analyst at Lehman Brothers and Barclays Capital, where he focused on the chemicals and materials sectors. He was later a management consultant at Nomura Research Institute, where he specialised in M&A advisory, business strategy planning, and turnaround management, before joining Uzabase in 2011. As an executive officer, Osamu was in charge of business development in SPEEDA, before moving to Hong Kong in 2013 to help establish SPEEDA's Asia business. After serving as Managing Director of the Asia business, he returned to Tokyo and founded Uzabase Ventures, Inc. in February 2018, serving as the chief executive officer.

In my past experiences managing a startup, I keenly felt the immense difficulties, loneliness and stress that I believe any startup founder would. This is precisely why - now in my capacity as a VC who understands entrepreneurship - I seek to build a deep foundation of trust with founders, supporting them as they constantly iterate from their failures and build back better. In the face of an uncertain future, I hope to establish long-term relationships with each and every founder, helping them to enhance their corporate value for their businesses by focusing on first principles. I am looking forward to meeting founders - not only those who possess unique insights, proven execution capabilities, great empathy for others, and an enjoyment for a little risk-taking, but above all, those who are committed to long-term value creation. Together, I believe that we can truly collaborate closely to build a future with impact on a global scale.
After graduating from International Christian University, Chiamin joined a major ERP vendor, working on corporate digitization and operational reforms projects across Japan and Europe. She then worked for a U.S. strategy consulting firm, Monitor Group, overseeing business strategy planning and Asian expansion projects, before joining DCM Ventures as a venture capitalist, where she was in charge of investments into startups such as freee and Coubic, etc. In 2014, she joined Happy Elements, a Chinese startup, serving as Chief Strategy Officer and in charge of their listing in Japan, before becoming the Representative Director of Japan, overseeing content development and AR/VR businesses in Japan and China. Chiamin has an MBA from IE Business School. She joined FIRSTLIGHT Capital in November2021.
Yoichi Aso

Being more than a just a partner
On top of my role as a venture capitalist, I suppose I could also be described as an entrepreneur as the manager of three companies. Given my experience in both worlds, I believe that I can offer my own unique practical support and networking.
I would like to move away from the stereotypical notons of "investor" and "entrepreneur" and to work together with entrepreneurs as partners that complement each other and help each other to grow.
After graduating from the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo University, Yoichi joined Recruit Holdings. He subsequently founded a business that was turned into a subsidiary and expanded to around 150 employees, before becoming an executive manger of Recruit's Incubation Department, supervising group-wide business development. In this position, Yoichi helped to create 1,500 business proposals and provided support to 300 startups, before making the decision to become an entrepreneur in 2018. He is a co-founder of the gene analysis startup Genome Clinic, as well as the founder of Alphadrive, which supports internal business development within companies. Alphadrive was acquired by Uzabase in 2019 and became independent again through a carve-out in 2024. Yoichi became a venture partner in FIRSTLIGHT Capital in June 2018.

In order meet the ideal needs of every user, it is important to first and foremost refine our product offerings and build a strong team. This is the very process that all startups need to go through as they strive to develop their own products. I have had the opportunity to experience the launch and growth of B2B SaaS businesses both domestically in Japan and overseas, specifically involved in Customer Success. I want to contribute to the ecosystem by give back the experiences of working closely with customers through the multitude of successes and failures through the early stage of startups, and provide that hands-on support for future entrepreneurs. It is with this in mind that I have decided to joined UB Ventures, and I greatly look forward to accompanying many startups as they move toward to make their vision a reality.
After graduating from Aoyama Gakuin University, Faculty of International Politics and Economics, Oshika joined Uzabase in 2013 as a first year graduate, working as Head of the SPEEDA Customer Loyalty team in his second year. Since 2018, he has been working as the Head of Asia Customer Success Division, managing teams across Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sri Lanka, as well as working on business planning and development in Asia. He joined FIRSTLIGHT Capital in February 2021.
Riho Majima

I am delighted every time I meet entrepreneurs who have found a way forward and made progress together, no matter how hard things are. Especially in the early phases, entrepreneurs are often confronted with all aspects of the business, organization, and finances. That's why I am committed to being a hands-on accompanist, using my experience in the launch of business, sales, and corporate teams. In these good times, when the role that business can play in addressing social issues is expanding, I would like to partner in start-ups that bring positive change to industry and people's lives, and I would like to have grand ambitions myself.
After graduating from Elmhurst Ballet School in association with Birmingham Royal Ballet, UK, Riho joined Uzabase as an intern while attending Keio University. After working across Inside Sales at SPEEDA, Customer Success at FORCAS, and new graduate recruitment (management intern in summer 2018), she joined Uzabase in 2019 as a new graduate. She then worked in both Field Sales and Customer Success at SPEEDA, where she was involved in generating new leads and onboarding, to support early stages of service implementation. Riho joined FIRSTLIGHT Capital in October 2021.
Midori Koike

After graduating from Kanda University of International Studies, Midori joined Septeni Holdings Co., Ltd., a major online advertising agency, working primarily on overseas corporate operations such as establishment of offices across Asia, Europe and the United States, in accounting, finance, and HR divisions. She then joined Uzabase in 2017, supporting overseas expansion by establishing an operational structure for SPEEDA's Asia business, covering commercial feasibility for the China market, and overall corporate operations in Asia and the United States. Midori joined FIRSTLIGHT Capital in August 2021.
Miyu Nomura

Miyu joined Mizuho Bank, Ltd. after graduating from International Christian University in 2012, and worked as operations/client service officer in global custody and proxy business. In 2015, Miyu moved to Hong Kong and joined Brown Brothers Harriman Trustee Services (Hong Kong) Ltd., a global service provider of investor services, working primarily on a new setup of Japan desk team to support institutional investors based in Japan. After returning to Japan in 2020, Miyu joined JPMorgan Securities Japan Co., Ltd. to be responsible for a new legal entity setup under JP Morgan group and build up an Operations/MO team. Miyu Joined FIRSTLIGHT Capital in May 2022.
Nobuaki Nachi

After graduating from university, he joined NEC Corporation and engaged in corporate sales, domestic business development, and overseas sales and business development (Africa region). After that, he joined ExaWizards Inc.and worked on several projects as an AI consultant. In 2019, he joined Uzabase and engaged in sales to major enterprise companies in the Expert Network business. Nobuaki joined FIRSTLIGHT Capital in May 2024. He also founded his own company, Alumnus, Inc. in 2024.
Maehashi Takuya

Takuya graduated from the Faculty of Liberal Arts at the University of Tokyo. During his time in university, he participated as an intern at Uzabase and was responsible for industry and company analysis in the SPEEDA business division. After graduating from university, he joined Toyota Motor Corporation and engaged in procurement for motors and battery components for EVs and HVs. In 2019, he re-joined Uzabase and took on various roles including sales, customer success, and marketing in the INITIAL business division. In 2020, he became the Director and COO at a construction industry SaaS development company, overseeing business management, product development, and sales. Takuya joined FIRSTLIGHT Capital in January 2023.

I have been involved in equity research for over 10 years, specifically conducting data analysis on corporate and industry performance. During my time at Uzabase, I was mainly in charge of publishing industry research for client accounts, but now at FIRSTLIGHT Capital, I am focused on creating content specifically related to SaaS startups.
Representative Director of Craft Data, K.K. After graduation, he started his career at a Japanese financial data service provider where he was engaged in sales of web apps and corporate planning for institutional investors. Thereafter in 2013, he joined Uzabase, where he lead the SPEEDA division as manager for the consulting team. In 2020, he started his own company, specializing in SaaS and IPO-related data analysis and publication.
Momoko Kyukawa

Editorial Expertise as a Driver for Business Growth
After a 10-year long career in various editorial positions including a journalist and a magazine editor, I joined NewsPicks to establish our advertising business.
As I produced branded content for various companies, organizations, and services, I started to think more deeply about the intrinsic value of information and how it impacts business growth. Especially in the case of startups and entrepreneurs, information dissemination at every stage of their business - from founding, to service launch and hiring - has a potential to be a great driver of growth. It is in this regard that I look forward to employing my editorial expertise to support startups as their businesses grow.
After having graduated from Hitotsubashi University, Faculty of Commerce and Management, Momoko worked at a multinational financial institution before joining Nikkei Business Publications. After giving birth to two children, she worked as a producer and editor-in-chief of a women’s magazine. In March 2015, she joined Uzabase’s NewsPicks, where as Chief Producer, she launched the Brand Design team for the advertising business, producing numerous brand content for various companies, including large corporations and startups alike.

By leveraging the experiences I have built up through working in an auditing firm and investment bank, establishing Uzabase's Corporate Division as CFO, as well as the knowledge I have accumulated through my current support of startup companies, I believe I can be of help to the corporate divisions of growing companies in areas such as financial strategy planning, IPO preparation, the creation of financial reporting systems, corporate structure, management systems, and how to choose and deal with auditing firms and securities companies.
Putting in place a reliable and efficient corporate division that accelerates business growth is a shortcut on the road to becoming a prosperous company. I would like to help people take that shortcut!
A certified public accountant, Mirai is a graduate of Keio University's Faculty of Business and Commerce. Following his graduation, he worked in the auditing department at PwC, before moving on to the Corporate Client Solutions department of UBS Securities where he provided corporate M&A and financial strategy advisory services. He later moved to KPMG Healthcare Japan, working in M&A advisory and strategic consulting in the hospital and nursing care sectors. He joined Uzabase in 2012 and, as CFO, lay the foundations of the company's Corporate Division as a listed company, as well as working on the IPO, fundraising, and M&As including the acquisition of Quartz. In 2019, Mirai founded Somebuddy Inc., which provides advisory services primarily to startups, along with another Uzabase colleague and he is currently supporting the growth of multiple companies.

Supporting creativity with the law
The greatest joy I get from working with and supporting startup companies is experiencing the vision, passion, and innovative ideas of entrepreneurs on a daily basis as they incessantly pursue the creation of new value.
In addition to dealing with the legal issues faced by startups as they grow (examining the legality of business operations, creating terms of use, negociating partnerships, developing internal systems, etc.), I hope to think about and take on the wide range of challenges faced by entrepreneurs in the early stages together with the entrepreneurs themselves, build relationships forged on mutal hard work that can help drive business growth.
A lawyer by trade, Kenta is a graduate of both Keio University's Faculty of Economics and Rikkyo Law School. After registering as a laywer in 2008, he worked at a law firm in Tokyo that primarily handled cases related to international companies where he focused on supporting overseas businesses looking to expand into Japan. He subsequently worked in an office that mainly dealt with domestic cases before establishling Ushigome Law Offices in Januray 2018. Today, Kenta provides daily legal consulation and prepares contracts and agreements, primarily for startups and SMEs, as well as providing support to companies at each stage of growth, including in relation to the establishment of new businesses and the development of internal legal systems.
Hideyuki Takeuchi

Forging a strong bond between the arts of development and business
Over the past 20 years, I have been involved in the development of many different services as an engineer and am well-versed in the high and lows of all aspects of the development process, from building the physical infrastructure layer and the front end to applying them in the real business world.
It is my hope to be able to provide assistance in creating a service from scratch, as well as to help bridge the gap between business and engineering as much as possible.
To this day, I continue to engage in system development, and I also hope to be able to provide a range of support in relation to the use of the latest technologies and their integration into various business scenarios.
An engineer, Hideyuki graduated from the Tokyo University of Technology's School of Information Science and was also enrolled in its Graduate School of Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering, leaving before graduation. During his time in university, he founded two IT companies and gained experience in the development of numerous services involving both hardware and software. Hideyuki has been involved in product development since the establishment of Uzabase in 2008, developing the foundations of SPEEDA, NewsPicks, and FORCAS. Following periods as both executive and professional officer, he currently serves as Uzabase's Chief Technologist, as well as Technology Partner in FIRSTLIGHT Capital. In addition, he founded Yesod, which develops SaaS for SaaS, in September 2019.
Noriko Arahori
Standing Statutory Auditor
Following her graduation from Doshisha University, Noriko joined Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. After a period in the USA due to her husband's work, she returned to Japan and gave birth to her first child. She subsequently worked in a consulting firm before joining Uzabase as a full-time corporate auditor in 2015 and contributed to the company's listing on the Mothers of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2016. Noriko has been in charge of internal auditing in the Uzabase Group since March 2019, and is a certified public accountant serving as an auditor for its group companies.
Rui Ishino

Rui began her career as an intern at Uzabase, Inc. and played a key role in launching the inside sales team for the SPEEDA division. After graduation, Rui led the implementation of marketing automation initiatives and later transitioned into sales and marketing roles within SPEEDA's startup research division. She then gained experience at STORES, Inc. as an executive assistant and PR specialist. In 2021, Rui relocated to the U.S., and deepened her expertise in the startup ecosystem. Currently, Rui works as a freelance PR consultant, helping companies enhance their brand visibility and communication strategies in global markets.
Tomoki Hirano

Visualising the future of business through design
I am involved in shaping the overall customer experience, starting from UI design, as well as the development of user research and design workshops. From marketing to customer success, I try to harness the power of design to support business development.
I break this power of design down into four parts: "ability to visualise", "ability to model", "ability to test out", and "ability to translate". It is about visualisation and resonating with people in a genuine way, about trying out new ideas and speaking to the inner voices of customers and users.
I want to meet startups and entrepreneurs who also recognise the potential of design, and harness its power together with them. I hope to bring together a group of designers who share the same mission and values, and use the power of design to boost corporate value as much as possible.
After graduating from Art University, following periods at transcosmos Inc., and Concent, Inc., Tomoki co-founded Triand Inc. (now DSCL) and engaged in corporate branding and new business support for SMB, government agencies, universities, and manufacturers. He then joined Uzabase in 2019, launching and managing design division and building design systems for BtoB SaaS products. He is the recipient of multiple accolades including Red Dot Design Award, iF DESIGN AWARD, and Good Design Award Best 100, etc. He is focused on “what can I pass on” for the next organization, culture, and era.
